Chicago Council on Global Affairs and 1871 Announce Innovative Exchange Program

Two Leading Chicago Organizations Will Feature Prominent Technology And Global Affairs Leaders To Foster Dialogue On Big Issues Of The Day; Madeleine Albright Launches The Series.

CHICAGO (May 29, 2015) – The Chicago Council on Global Affairs and 1871 today announced a new partnership to foster important dialogue around technology and global affairs – two key drivers of the future. Each organization will share some of the prominent speakers and visitors it attracts annually to meet with the other organization.  This innovative exchange program kicked off today with a visit to 1871 from former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright to participate in a special roundtable discussion with entrepreneurs and other members of the 1871 community. Albright is in the city to address the inaugural Chicago Forum on Global Cities, hosted by The Chicago Council on Global Affairs and the Financial Times.

"We are thrilled to evolve our relationship with The Chicago Council by developing this new program that will foster dialogue and new ideas throughout the community," said 1871 CEO Howard A. Tullman. "By sharing our speakers and giving additional forums to our visitors, we will be better able to showcase Chicago as a global city and a leader in innovative thought about the future."

The speaker exchange series will involve each organization sharing visitors with the other organization, facilitating additional interactions, and increasing the exposure of Chicagoans to valued visitors to our city.

"The Chicago Council on Global Affairs strives to be a driving force in bringing the world to Chicago, and Chicago to the world, and our more than 200 speaker programs each year are a core component in achieving our mission," said Ambassador Ivo H. Daalder, President of The Chicago Council on Global Affairs. "By collaborating with 1871, we’re leveraging the high-tech and entrepreneurial sector that is an important pillar in Chicago’s standing as a global city – and extending our role in contributing to the public discourse on global issues."

1871 has, in its three-year history, attracted an exciting array of speakers, including Steve Ballmer, Steve Case, Ben Horowitz, Padmasree Warrior, Sheryl Sandberg, Mark Cuban, and Christy Turlington. The Chicago Council on Global Affairs is known around the world for being a premier venue for speakers and attracts hundreds of speakers a year, including Leon Panetta, China’s Vice Premier Wang Yang, Jeb Bush, Timothy Geithner, Ireland’s President Michael Higgins, former Prime Minister of Australia Kevin Rudd, and New York Times columnist and author David Brooks.

The launch of the speaker exchange program coincides with the Chicago Forum on Global Cities that convened from May 27 through May 29. The forum brought together global city leaders of the four pillars vital to urban life—business, education, arts and culture, and civics—for a multidisciplinary discussion on how they can collaborate to make their cities more economically vital, socially inclusive, and environmentally livable.

“I’m incredibly excited to see the international thought leaders that 1871 and The Chicago Council on Global Affairs will bring to Chicago’s entrepreneurial community,” said 1871 member Matt Meltzer, founder and CEO of Sage Corps. “Our program takes US college students abroad to work with entrepreneurs in global startup communities, so this resource is another great opportunity from 1871 that will directly impact our business.”

In addition to the exchange program, 1871 will be obtaining a membership with The Chicago Council that will allow all of its members to participate in certain programming from The Chicago Council on Global Affairs throughout the year.
