We recently held our ChiBuys Winter Tasting to much fanfare -- in just two hours, nearly 400 guests from all corners of the city joined us in our effort to support local minority and women-owned food vendors. We thought we'd share some of the event highlights in case you missed it. Still in the Game: NFL Defensive End Devon Still @ 1871

Formerly a defensive end for the Cincinnati Bengals, NFL star Devon Still was recovering from multiple injuries when his daughter Leah was diagnosed with a rare pediatric cancer. Despite mounting odds, Still returned to the football field wearing Leah's message of hope during every game, inspiring millions around the world. Still visited 1871 to share his journey of overcoming adversity, and the entrepreneurial lessons he's learned both on and off the field.

Applications are now open for Campus 1871 2018, a weekend-long event held once a year between 1871 and its major university partners: Northwestern University, Illinois Institute of Technology, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Illinois Springfield, DePaul University, Loyola University Chicago, University of Chicago and, for the first time, Trinity Christian College.

Last month, Nirav Amin stood in front of a packed room at the new Apple Michigan Avenue.  “How many of you are entrepreneurs or working on your own business idea?” he asked the crowd. More than half of the room raised their hands. Some had attended each event in the four-part “Accelerate Your Startup Idea” series aimed at educating, guiding, and supporting the Chicago community in pursuit of their entrepreneurial passions, and had finally arrived at this culminating session where they would soon have the opportunity to pitch their business ideas to a panel of judges.

Former U.S. CTO Megan Smith Talks Tech Jobs at 1871

On October 30, 1871 hosted the Tech Jobs Tour, a forum which helps diverse, non-traditional talent find jobs in the technology space. The national tour features top tech experts who are women, people of color, LGBTQ, veterans and people with disabilities. Megan Smith, former CTO of the United States and CEO of shift7, gave the keynote speech and stopped by 1871 earlier in the day to meet with women entrepreneurs in the space.
